Why should we stretch?

Why should we stretch?

Sitting in a chair all day results in right hamstrings in the back of the thigh. That can make it harder to extend your leg or straighten your knee all the way. Tight muscles when suddenly called upon may become damaged from being suddenly stretched. Injured muscles may not be strong enough to support the joints which can lead to injury of the joint.
Regular stretching keeps muscles long, lean and flexible and this means that exertion won’t put too much force in the muscle itself. Stretching after exercise will allow your breathing and heart rate to slow and bring the mind and body back to a resting state!

Here are a few benefits of stretching:

  • Decrease Stress
  • Reduce pain & Stiffness
  • Improve health – Reduce Blood pressure, heart rate & breathing rate.
  • Enhanced Range of Motion
  • Reduce risk of Injury
  • Enhance performance
  • Improved blood flow & Circulation – allowing for the enhanced transportation of oxygen and nutrient rich blood throughout the body.
  • Minimise wear & Tear on joints
  • Improve quality of life
Stretching improves flexibility, which increases the ability of a joint to move through its full range of motion – How far it can bend, twist and reach. All stretching should be done safely and with care.
When you stretch you aim for slight discomfort however, If you experience pain you should stop immediately and seek advice from medical professional.
